Residents work to save Bronx supermarket

Residents in the South Bronx neighborhood of Soundview are working on saving the area’s biggest supermarket, a Key Food in The Bruckner Plaza shopping center at Bruckner Boulevard and White Plains Road. Vornado Realty Trust paid $165 million last year to Kushner Cos. for the 386,000-square-foot shopping center and plans to raise rents to $50 per square foot. That’s about five times higher than the store’s current rent, and residents say the store will be forced out when its lease expires. A recent city report, “Going to Market,” found that a wave of supermarket closings has left large parts of the city underserved, including nearly the entire South Bronx
