Helmsley’s money gone to the dogs

Hotelier Leona Helmsley left her dog, Trouble, $12 million in her will, but that was just the beginning: she also wrote in a “mission statement” that her entire trust, valued at $5 billion to $8 billion, should be used for the care of dogs. The statement was not included in the will, so it’s not legally binding, but the law tends to favor donor’s intent. Two people said Helmsley’s statement included helping indigent people and providing care for dogs, but she later erased the first goal.
