The Port Authority reached a tentative agreement to help rebuild St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
on Liberty Street, which was destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001. The PA agreed
to give St. Nicholas $20 million to build a larger church at the
northwest corner of Greenwich and Liberty streets, with a
nondenominational hall for visitors to ground zero. The agreement still
needs approval from the PA’s board, and would be a significant step
forward for the World Trade Center site project, plagued by delays and cost overruns.
