Williamsburg market averts shutdown

A Depression era public market in east Williamsburg looks like it will stay open a year and a half after the city proposed shutting it down to make way for rental apartments. The Moore Street Retail Market vendors, many of which have been in business for decades, are about to sign five year leases. They might have been saved by the faltering economy. The city had bought neighboring properties, but reportedly scrapped its plans to build rental housing because of the down economy. The market is also known as La Marqueta de Williamsburg.
