The newly restored aircraft carrier USS Intrepid will return to the reconstructed Pier 86 in Hudson River Park Thursday. Construction management company Skanska has entirely rebuilt Pier 86, at 12th Avenue and 46th Street, into a “military style” pier, and used a team of divers and underwater engineers to rebuild the pier on 360 steel-pipe piles sunk to bedrock. The pier is 782 feet long by 150 feet wide, and includes a 65-foot-tall glass elevator tower and 217-foot-long peninsula bedrock. The decommissioned USS Intrepid operates as the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. It will return to Pier 86 with a grand public reopening the weekend of Nov. 8. TRD
