Brooklyn City Council member Bill DeBlasio said he won’t vote for turning the Gowanus Canal area into a residential and light industry district unless the Department of City Planning restricts new building heights in nearby Carroll Gardens. DeBlasio also wants to block hotel construction on manufacturing blocks near the Gowanus Canal. The Gowanus Canal plan calls for tall residential buildings, and includes no provisions for curbing hotel construction. The Department of City Planning says it will study Carroll Gardens to consider limiting building heights and densities, but the agency said it would not halt its pursuit of transforming the Gowanus corridor.
