Crane operators suspended, fined for unsafe conditions

Two tower crane operators’ licenses were suspended by the city’s Department of Buildings, following an investigation of a construction worker’s death on Sept. 4. The operators are brothers Christopher Van Duyne, who was suspended for eight months, and James Van Duyne, who was suspended for six months. They must also each pay $25,000 to the buildings department, and must complete a minimum of 30 hours of training before the suspension period ends. The Van Duynes were initially suspended Sept. 23 based on charges that they endangered public safety and violated city construction codes. The two men were members of a rigging crew dismantling a tower crane at 600 West 42nd Street when a worker, Anthony Esposito, fell from a platform attached to the crane and died. The investigation revealed a guardrail had been removed from the platform. TRD
