Municipal Art Society releases Coney plan

The Municipal Art Society of New York, a nonprofit urban planning, design and preservation group, released its proposal for Coney Island today. The plan calls for Coney Island to feature indoor and outdoor event and performance space starting in summer 2009, including a renovated, 2,300-seat Shore Theater, combining a vaudeville theater and a circus. The proposal includes a cable-car ride that would connect Coney Island’s attractions. Events and programs could include a Halloween parade, video game competitions, an international music festival and international graffiti contests. The society will provide more details about funding at the end of the year. The city is planning a 9-acre entertainment area in Coney Island and is in negotiations to buy 10.5 acres of Coney Island land from developer Joseph Sitt. TRD
