Of the 1,158 buildings that were
made landmarks in the fiscal year 2007, 96 percent were outside of
Manhattan, and all three historic districts designated in fiscal year 2008 were in the outer boroughs, according to AM New York’s third annual preservation report. The report recommends several more buildings
outside of Manhattan for landmark preservation, including Brooklyn’s
Rapid Transit Power House at 322 Third Avenue, which is currently under
Landmarks review. It was built in 1902, and provided power to
Brooklyn’s steam railroads, elevated trains and street cars. Also on
the list is the Ridgewood Theater at 55-27 Myrtle Avenue in Queens,
which opened in 1916 and is currently for sale.
