A proposal to create more green space in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is upsetting some World’s Fair historians. The World’s Fair was held in the park during 1939-1940 and 1964-1965. The proposal calls for removing the dormant Fountain of Fairs and replacing it with a grassy festival space, according to the Parks Department, but some historians say that will destroy the essence of the World’s Fair space. The plan would also create new pathways in the park, removing the ones that once led to World’s Fair pavilions. The plan for the 1,255-acre park has no funding or timetable yet.
