Despite the recession, several
cultural institutions are still building new spaces and renovating
current ones, including Lincoln Center’s redevelopment, the expansion
of the Queens Museum of Art and the Museum of the City of New York, and the
renovation of El Museo del Barrio. The construction
projects will generate about $28.5 million in local taxes for the
city, according to a report by the Alliance for the Arts. The city Department of Cultural Affairs has $1 billion planned for capital
construction at more than 200 organizations through 2013.
