Shaun Donovan confirmed as Obama’s HUD secretary

The United States
Senate confirmed Shaun Donovan as President Barack Obama’s secretary of
Housing and Urban Development. Donovan was previously the city’s
commissioner of Housing Preservation and Development. In a statement,
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, “At this moment, when so many Americans
have lost their homes, and so many more are afraid that they soon will,
the country is fortunate to have someone of Shaun’s intelligence,
passion and determination to lead the Department of Housing and Urban
Development.” Donovan was influential in implementing the mayor’s plan
to create 165,000 units of affordable housing in the city, which was expected to be completed by 2013 but has been pushed back to 2014 because of the recession. Of
more than 17,000 affordable home mortgages created so far through the
plan, only five have faced foreclosure, Bloomberg said. TRD
