Papers belonging to Citi Habitats with buyers’ personal information, including bank statements, credit reports and social security numbers, were strewn along Columbus Avenue on Monday. New York State law requires businesses to destroy or delete personal information before disposing of it. In a statement, Citi Habitats’ president said, “We believe that during the refurbishing of our 465 Columbus Avenue office, paper that should have been shredded was improperly placed as trash.” The documents found pertained to real estate transactions that took place in 2006 and 2007.
