NYC real estate in brief

U.S. Rep. calls for renter protection
U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez of New York is calling on the U.S.
Treasury and Department of Housing and Urban Development to protect
renters who are at risk of being evicted because their landlords are
facing foreclosure. Residents in rental properties make up 40 percent
of all families affected by the foreclosure crisis, Velazquez said.
“These are tenants that comply with their lease requirements and make
their payments on time but because the landlord goes into foreclosure,
they end up on the streets. As we move forward in addressing the
housing crisis, the rights of New York City renters must be protected,”
Velazquez said.

Retailers coming to Port Authority bus terminal
The Times Square Alliance and the Fashion Center Business Improvement
District are launching Blank Sl8, a new showcase that will have
rotating retailers featuring design, fashion and visual arts created by New
York-based artists and designers. The community groups are partnering
with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to house the retail at the corner of Eighth
Avenue and 41st Street at the bus terminal. The first tenant for
the space has not been announced yet, but is scheduled to open by May 1.
