City Planning approves Coney Island

The plan still needs to be approved by the City Council. The City Planning Commission
approved the plan to redevelop Coney Island today. The project is
expected to create 25,000 construction jobs, thousands of permanent
jobs and new housing, but critics say the city offers no guarantees that the wages will be up to standard or the housing affordable. Dozens of
Coney Island activists disrupted the voting session. “Redeveloping
Coney Island without including a significant amount of affordable
housing would leave low- to middle-income New Yorkers with fewer
housing choices and put current residents at risk of losing their
homes,” protester Carmen Gonzalez said. [AP via Crain’s] and [NBC]
