Governors Island saw a record number of visitors from May to October this year, with more than 275,000 people trekking to the island. The figures mark a 110 percent increase over the same time period a year ago, according to a report from the Governors Island Blog. This influx of visitors comes on the heels of an increased interest in developing the space over the past three years, as state officials made special allotments to develop the space and New York University expressed its interest in building a campus there. This summer marked the opening of the island’s 2.2-mile promenade and Picnic Point, an open space with hammocks, swings and a sustainable farm.
