New York City has received its first solar-powered car-charging station, according to a press release sent today from Beautiful Earth Group, a sustainable energy company, which built the station. The charging center, located in Red Hook near the company’s offices, was built from recycled materials. The station is currently being used to charge the BMW Group’s MINI E, one of a scant few cars that runs entirely on solar power, according to the release. The car takes three hours to charge and has a 100-mile range. Amanda Cleary, associate manager of sustainability for Beautiful Earth Group, said the station is on Degraw Street, nearby the company’s headquarters at 179 Columbia Street, but she would not disclose the charging station’s exact location.
