V. Reddy Kancharla, president of concrete testing firm Testwell Laboratories, was convicted today of falsifying safety reports on over 100 projects in the city, including the new Yankee Stadium, the new Second Avenue subway and the Freedom Tower at Ground Zero. The jury has not yet reached a verdict on the more serious racketeering charges he and his company also face. Defense lawyers had said Testwell, along with Kancharla and the other three executives charged, had not purposely doctored results and that they were the result of inadvertent mistakes. Two engineers from Testwell, Edward Porter and Michael Sterlacci, have already pleaded guilty to conspiracy, saying that they knew their data was fake. Each has been fined — Porter paid $100,000 and Sterlacci is expected to pay upwards of $138,000 — and is not expected to get jail time. [AP via Crain’s]
