Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s plan for a $64 million amphitheater in Coney Island’s Asser Levy Seaside Park has met with staunch opposition from park lovers already feeling squeezed for space. The concert venue and its adjacent elevated lawn, to be located along Surf Avenue between Ocean Parkway and West 5th Street, would take up most of the park’s main green. Asser Levy currently has 2.5 acres of usable recreation space, which would be slashed to less than 1 acre after the construction of the theater. Community Board 13’s beaches, parks and recreation committee is slated to discuss the plan next week. [Brooklyn Paper]
