The Harlem School of the Arts, a nearly 50-year-old institution located at 645 St. Nicholas Avenue that shuttered earlier this month due to a funding emergency, will reopen thanks to an outpouring of financial support from donors both private and public. After the school, which educates children in both performing and visual arts, closed April 1, officials announced that it would need $500,000 just to make it to the end of the year, let alone reopen for good. As part of the school’s reopening plan, new board members, including the dean of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, have been appointed, after alleged financial mismanagement was uncovered.
