Former BP gas station stinking up Park Slope at stalled condo site, residents claim

BP may already have its hands full with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, but Park Slope residents say that’s no excuse for abandoning the contaminated site of An Old Bp Service Station On Fourth Avenue. The site, purchased in 2008 by Tona Development for a planned 12-story condo development, began releasing noxious fumes when the gas station was demolished. The condo’s concrete foundation was supposed to seal the leak, but the project stalled last year when Tona fell short on cash. BP covered the oily puddle in April with several feet of soil, but neighbors say the smell remains. “Maybe those people are smelling the Gowanus Canal,” said Tona President Domenick Tonacchio. “It’s not us.” [NYDN]
