Tamir Sapir’s 19,500-square-foot Duke Semans mansion, at 1009 Fifth
Avenue near 82nd Street, is under contract for $40 million, setting it
up to be the city’s biggest townhouse deal since the beginning of the
recession, according to the Post. The landmarked Beaux Arts property,
which hit the market for $50 million six months ago, sold to an
unidentified Russian buyer, though sources noted that it is not Nets
owner Mikhail Prokhorov. It has 12 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, three
elevators and 11 marble fireplaces, but is a fixer-upper nonetheless,
reportedly in need of millions of dollars worth of renovations. Sapir,
who paid $40 million to buy the home in 2006, had originally intended
to build an art gallery there, but has since abandoned that plan. Paula
Del Nunzio and Shirley Mueller of Brown Harris Stevens had the listing.
