The New York City Department of Health has shut down Cake Man Raven Confectionery — a bakery at 708 Fulton Street famous for its red velvet cake and feeding celebrities including Jay-Z, Robert De Niro and Oprah Winfrey — due to sanitary violations, the New York Times’ “The Local” blog reported. The violations cited include food from an unapproved source, flies, lack of a hand-washing facility near the food preparation area and absence of a food protection certificate, which posed “immediate health risks,” according to a statement from the health department. If it wants to re-open, the Fort Greene bakery must correct the 78 violations it received on its inspection, renew its operating permit and schedule a re-opening inspection. Cake Man Raven, who was born Raven Patrick De’Sean Dennis III, also had his 10-year-old shop closed by the health department in January 2008. Calls to the store for comment were not returned. [NYT]
