Renderings of the life science complex
City officials and developer Alexandria Real Estate Equities unveiled a new, 310,000-square-foot science park today at 450 East 29th Street, the first of the collaborators’ three planned life science facilities for a vacant stretch of land along First Avenue. The Alexandria Center for Life Science, located on a three-acre, city-owned site, has benefited from millions in city, state and federal funding. The city provided $13.4 million in capital funds for the project, while the State of New York and the U.S. Economic Development Administration provided $27 million and $2 million, respectively. The life science center is the latest in an ongoing initiative to bring more science facilities to New York City — earlier this year, construction began on a 486,000-sqaure-foot commercial bioscience facility at the Brooklyn Army Terminal.
