Cat Rock
The Osborn family, which built the 14-bedroom hilltop castle known as Cat Rock in Garrison, N.Y. in 1919 and has lived there ever since, is considering selling it for upwards of $20 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. Three generations of Osborns currently live on the 100-acre property and more than 20 family members own shares, but between the taxes (about $100,000 per year) and the maintenance (heating the house can cost as much as $200 per day in the winter), 63-year-old Frederick Henry Osborn III is looking for a way out. The family helps cover the payments by renting out the castle, which overlooks the Hudson River, for summer weddings at a daily rate of $55,000, but it’s often not enough. The mansion isn’t officially listed, but Osborn III’s wife, Anne, said the family wants to find a buyer who will preserve the property. [WSJ]
