Losing Greenpoint Hospital bidders sue city

The losing parties in a bid to redevelop the former Greenpoint Hospital on the corner of Kingsland and Maspeth avenues last year have sued the city, claiming that the Queens construction company that ultimately won the $32 million contract was given “an unfair advantage in the competitive process,” according to the Brooklyn Paper. The plaintiffs, Greenpoint Renaissance Enterprise Corporation and its would-be non-profit development partner St. Nicks Alliance, allege in the suit that the city allowed TNS-Great American Construction to significantly strengthen its proposal after the city’s initial review, without giving other applicants a chance to do the same. The two local groups, which had pushed for the city to redevelop the hospital for more than two decades, have since been lobbying the city to reverse its decision to go with TNS’ plan for 240 affordable housing units at the site. “We wanted to give the city an opportunity to review its decision before taking this to court, but the city has refused to communicate with us in the interim,” said Jan Peterson, president of Greenpoint Renaissance.
