Yankees’ biggest addition takes four units in NJ rental development

The Yankees most expensive off-season acquisition, right-handed pitcher Rafael Soriano, finally moved into his new digs last week at the RiversEdge building in Weehawken, N.J. Soriano signed leases for four rental units in the building, one for him, one for his assistant, one for his trainer and chef and another reserved for his sisters who travel from the Dominican Republic to games frequently, for a total of $15,000 a month according to the Keller Williams’ sales associate who brokered the lease, Gershon Adjaye.
Adjaye, who recently brought his Gersh Group under the Keller Williams umbrella, has brokered sales and rentals for several athletes before — he would only name former Nets’ guard Jeff McInnis — but never a Yankee. Soriano was referred to Adjaye by a mutual acquaintance, but the pitcher had also reached out to Adjaye on one of his listings in the Watermark on Hudson, before another buyer swooped in and grabbed the apartment within 48 hours. Thus begun a home search that included a townhouse in Alpine, One Hudson Park in Edgewater, and a potential leasing deal at the Aventine Condos in Edgewater.
“Rafael was looking for a place with proximity to the stadium without being in [New York City],” Adjaye said, “and he wanted to be able to have enough space where his chef and assistant were nearby, but not living with him.”
Soriano signed a three-year contract with the Yankees in January worth $35 million, the only contract the team doled out to a new player worth more than $8 million, that includes opt-out clauses after each season. The pitcher sought a rental to keep his options open, the agent said. Soriano will reside in the largest of the four units, a 1,500-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with views of the city.
He joins fellow Yankee reliever Boone Logan among the building’s residents, which also included Stephen Graham of the Nets until the forward recently moved out, according to Adjaye. Soriano was not immediately available for comment.
