Tribeca dog run to get a roof over its head

Tribeca dog walkers should enjoy the view from the Warren Street dog run while they still can. Non-profit organization Manhattan Youth wants to extend its next-door Downtown Community Center with a gym and theater that would sit on top of the pathway. The new 70-by-40-foot structure, which would be wedged between P.S. 234 and 200 Chambers Street, wouldn’t affect the dog run, except to block its view of the sky, according to plans revealed this week. Community Board 1’s Youth and Education Committee voted to approve the proposal Tuesday night, DNAinfo reported. The approvals process is far from over, of course, as Manhattan Youth still needs to buy air rights and win the support of the co-op board at 200 Chambers Street. Bob Townley, executive director of Manhattan Youth, said he believes the project will cost in the millions of dollars range, and that his next step will be to create a committee of local residents to advise him on the project and help get it off the ground.
