Queens tennis club denied landmark status

The Landmarks Preservation Commission rejected the Queens West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills as a candidate for preservation yesterday, according to Crain’s. The reason, the commission stated in a letter, was that “the condition of [the stadium’s] architectural features has rendered it ineligible.” LPC cited spalling, or flaking, to the arches, crumbling concrete throughout the structure and water damage.

Michael Perlman, chair of Rego-Forest Preservation Council, submitted the request for evaluation last July. He told Crain’s that he plans to urge the commission to reconsider.

Last year, members of the club voted down a sale of the stadium to developer Cord Meyer Development, which intended to build condominium units, for $9 million.

The Queens stadium hosted the US Open between 1915 and 1977. [Crain’s]
