Asia de Cuba to shutter on Madison Avenue

Asian fusion eatery Asia de Cuba, located inside the Morgans New York hotel at 237 Madison Avenue, between 37th and 38th streets, will shutter in October to make space for a new venture by the hotel’s owners, Crain’s reported. Further details of what will replace the restaurant were unavailable, though Morgans previously said it was interested in opening its own restaurant.

Earlier this year, Morgans purchased 50 percent of the company’s interests from partner Jeffrey Chodorow’s China Grill Management. Chodorow will maintain the Asia de Cuba brand, Crain’s said, which includes locations in Miami, Los Angeles, and London.

Hotel industry experts say employees at Asia de Cuba have union agreements that may make it hard for a restaurant not owned by the hotel to make a profit. Celebrity clients of Asia de Cuba include Kylie Minogue and Lady Gaga. [Crain’s]
