The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum has completed a $54 million capital campaign to redesign its building, the Carnegie Mansion, at 2 East 91st Street, Crain’s reported, and will close in July to begin renovations.
The project will increase Cooper-Hewitt’s exhibition space by about 60 percent to about 16,000 square feet, Crain’s said, and will include a new 6,000-square-foot gallery, which will be the biggest gallery space in the museum.
“To be embarking on the transformation of the Carnegie Mansion with all the funding secured is a huge achievement,” said Paul Herzan, chairman of the museum’s board.
The city donated $8.8 million towards the renovation, while the state donated $250,000. About $20 million came from the Smithsonian Institution, and the remainder from private donors. [Crain’s]
