Harlem residents oppose a plan to give luxury apartments to developmentally disabled men, DNAinfo reported.
The men would move to the Savoy West, at 555 Lenox Avenue, with the help of non-profit Community Options. But the members of the local Community Board 10 said that the area has enough “special interest” housing. The board has had a moratorium on such housing arrangements since 2008. Community Options has fired back, saying this refusal is discrimination. The board and Community Options will attend a hearing with the commissioner of the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities slated for today.
“We already have more than our fair share of special interest housing. We have nothing against people with disabilities,” said Stanley Gleaton, chair of Community Board 10’s land use committee. [DNAinfo]
