A foreclosed, abandoned and stalled waterfront construction site in Long Island City, Queens, shows little sign of progress, the Daily News reported.
Property owners Baruch Singer and Marshall Weisman have reportedly spent the past eight years cleaning the site, a former oil refinery located at 44-02 Vernon Boulevard, by removing contaminated soil and treating water.
However, the clean-up work has created a pit that is now filled with water, the Daily News said. Community Board 2 Chairman Joseph Conley told the Daily News the water — now called “Lake Vernon” — could bring a vermin infestation around the site and could seep into the basements of neighboring buildings. Conley also mentioned that the fixes to the site put the plot’s owners in financial distress.
A spokesperson for real estate developer Durst Fetner Residential told the News that the company is interested in buying the site, but there’s nothing to do until the foreclosure case gets settled. [Daily News]
