Peninsula Hospital in Queens to close for good

Far Rockaway, Queens hospital, the Peninsula Hospital Center, will close after a struggle with bankruptcy, Crain’s reported.

The state’s Department of Health shut down the hospital’s laboratory last month, and after a month of not being able to admit patients, the hospital’s capital resources dwindled. Today, a bankruptcy court judge ordered the hospital closed, Crain’s said. Although an affiliated nursing home will not be affected, hundreds of jobs have been lost.

The hospital entered bankruptcy six months ago, according to published reports, and Revival Home Health Care took over the hospital’s functions, with CEO Todd Miller in charge at that time. Miller “had no experience overseeing a hospital complex,” Crain’s said, and underestimated the depth of the issues at the lab, which DOH officials said could take up to six months to be ready for recertification.

Lori Lapin Jones, the Chapter 11 trustee for the hospital, said she was exploring other possible health care uses for the space, including a primary care, urgent care or emergency care facility. [Crain’s]
