R.E.M. lead singer lists Soho penthouse with Hollywood pedigree

The former lead singer of rock band R.E.M. has listed his Soho penthouse for $10.95 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. Michael Stipe, whose band recently split after 31 years, bought the unit at 533 Canal Street in Soho from Ben Affleck’s younger brother Casey for $5.75 million in 2007 while it was being renovated. Affleck bought the unit from “Good Will Hunting” director Gus Van Sant, who purchased it in 2000.

Listed with Carter Wilcox and Chris Poore of the Corcoran Group, the duplex co-op has three bedrooms, a home office and a light-flooded central atrium with glass doors that open onto a 2,500-square-foot terrace with Hudson Rivers views. It also has an industrial-style kitchen designed by celebrity chef Mario Batali.

The unit is in a brick building with large windows on an irregular shaped lot near Washington Street, just south of the Holland Tunnel, in 1911. Stipe is moving out of it to search for a downtown loft and work space for he and his partner. [WSJ]
