Gansevoort Park Avenue parties anger neighbors

Park Avenue doesn’t exactly bring to mind Sunday afternoon bikini-wearing bashes, replete with DJ music and bottle service. But much to neighbors’ chagrin, that’s exactly what’s going on the overcrowded rooftop at The Gansevoort Park Avenue, at East 29th Street, according to the New York Post.

Neighbors say more than 300 revelers gather 19 stories high on the hotel’s roof, where building codes set a maximum capacity of 54 people, to order $2,750 bottles of champagne and dance to excessively loud music that literally rattles windows in nearby buildings. The parties are part of a Summer Series that is held every Sunday until Labor Day from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., but often stretch much later.

The huge crowd is aided by an indoor rooftop area that allows for 200 people, but most of those guests mingle outside in the warm summer weather.

In response to the widespread complaints, hotel officials have met with the police and the community board and the Post said the parties are working towards a viable solution.

The hotel has already gained some notoriety among “scenesters,” as Kim Kardashian and ex Kris Humphries reportedly stayed in the hotel’s $7,000 per night penthouse while filming a reality TV series. [Post]
