From Google to Midtown South to the forthcoming CornellNYC Tech campus on Roosevelt Island, tech influence abounds in New York City. The New York Daily News reported that a new proposal made to a Queens Regional Economic Development Council to bring a tech incubator space to Long Island City would not only create jobs, but also help strengthen the Queens tech entrepreneur and start-up community — making the “F-train tech corridor” prediction seem real.
The proposal — submitted by the Coalition for Queens, a non-profit that advocates growth of the Queens tech sector, and Plaxall, a packaging company — focuses on converting a one-story-high Plaxall warehouse on Anable Basin into the incubator space used for shared work space for entrepreneurs and start-ups, as well as continuing education classes and events. According to PropertyShark, the warehouse, located at 5-46 46th Avenue, measures 126,980 square feet. Anable Basin is located across the river from the future campus of CornellNYC Tech, a joint project of Cornell University and Israel’s Technion.
The idea for a tech incubator has received support from Jack Friedman, the executive director of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, and Congressman Joseph Crowley. Both men have heralded the potential for jobs and innovation. [NYDN]
