Great Neck, N.Y.-based Mayflower Business Group has plans to build a 12-story hotel on a relatively quiet block in the Fresh Meadows section of Queens, the Queens Chronicle reported, and residents are already lining up in opposition.
Mayflower filed plans with the Department of Buildings to erect a 127-foot tall, 33-room hotel with 49 parking spots at 61-27 186th Street. The site is a 13,000-square-foot lot adjacent to a former Filene’s Basement Parking Lot That Is Located Directly Across The Street from a series of suburban-style single-family homes. In fact, the lot itself used to house three single-family homes.
The site, half a block from the Long Island Expressway, is zoned for the developers to build the hotel as of right, but local Council member Mark Weprin said the city can still make changes to appease local residents. Fresh Meadows homeowners are concerned that it would bring too much traffic to a narrow street and place too much stress on public infrastructure that’s already overworked. Plus, they say, there’s no need for another hotel development when two Marriott hotels are planned off of 185th Street just across the highway. [QChron]
