In theme with The Real Deal‘s recent reporting on real estate divorce sagas, another chapter was written today, according to city records. Director Sam Mendes appears to have deeded his condominium at no-frills boutique building the Eagle to ex-wife Kate Winslet for $2.15 million.
Winslet, who married Mendes, who directed such films as “American Beauty” and “Road to Perdition,” in 2003, was expected to move home to England after the two split, tabloids said when divorce proceedings began, in 2010.
The couple bought the Chelsea condo for $4.99 million in 2006, according to Streeteasy.com, so the sale likely represents Mendes’ transfer of his interest in the apartment to her. That could also mean Winslet plans to remain in New York City, despite the rough divorce, which a source told the Daily Mail sent the actress into “meltdown mode,” at the time.
The 12-unit building lacks some of the bells and whistles of some pricey condo buildings downtown. While it does not have, for instance, a roof deck or gym, the building, which is situated between Tenth and Eleventh avenues, does offer 11-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling limestone in the bathrooms.
“It’s one of the few old buildings that is completely renoveated yet has retained its old character,” said Corcoran broker Robby Browne, who has sold other units in the building. He indicated that apartments such as Winslet’s, in the A line, are approximately 2,500 square feet.
Since the pair dissolved their union, Winslet has since been linked to model Louis Dowler, and more recently to Ned Rocknroll, Virgin Airlines head Richard Branson’s nephew, according to reports from the London Evening Standard.
