For less than half a million dollars, would-be buyers can get this sprawling upstate property on lockdown: The former Camp Georgetown prison, a low-security facility in Madison County, N.Y., is hitting the auction block, as the state’s budget has deteriorated, the New York Post reported.
The 31-acre facility boasts 38 buildings, including two gyms, three dormitories, 75 bathrooms, a mess hall and a chapel, the Post said. Bidding is set to start at $390,000. Camp Georgetown is about 35 miles from Syracuse, the Post said.
The prison was built in 1961, the Post said, but was shut down last year, along with seven other prisons. Governor Andrew Cuomo has led an effort to find investors willing to buy these properties, but has had little success because of their remote locations and deteriorating infrastructure.
