LGBT Community Center to get $7.5M reno

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center at 208 West 13th Street in the Greenwich Village is set to undergo a $7.5 million renovation, the New York Times reported. Work is slated to begin inside the 27,000-square-foot building by year’s end; the renovations are expected to be completed in about 14 months.

The work will focus on the building’s auditorium, assembly hall and front lobby. The lobby’s central reception desk will be removed for easier entrance. Interior walls on the east and west ends of the lobby will also be removed to make room for an expanded computer center and a café, seating 30. The assembly hall will be stripped of a false ceiling and a structurally redundant column row that separates the space. The auditorium — reportedly known for having poor acoustics when the air conditioning is running — will get an air duct facelift, as well as insulated windows to improve inside sound.

Brian Ripel at RSVP Architecture Studio and Nicola Mongelli at N-Plus Architecture + Design are the architects of record. Financing includes $3.7 from the city, $2 million from the state and the remainder will come from fundraising. [NYT]
