DOB’s LiMandri: I knew One57 crane would not fall

While the dangling crane at Extell’s One57 terrified the FDNY and residents nearby, Department of Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri “knew the crane was not going to fall,” the New York Observer reported.

“We felt very comfortable that the ties that held up the mast were intact, and that was a very good sign, knowing that the mast had not been compromised,” LiMandri told the Observer. “We had some estimates on the iron chords that were holding the mast together to the balloon, so we were fairly comfortable that that part was secure.”

However, the city was very careful when it came to securing the crane, LiMandri told the paper, explaining that the crane’s manufacturer and other construction engineering experts from Europe were flown in to make sure they could “get it right.”
