Less than a block from Extell Development’s infamous One57 condos, the developer is planning to build a 1,550-foot mixed-use tower. Extell plans to build an 88-story residential building with 233 units at 217-225 West 57th Street, according to documents filed with the Department of Buildings, cited by Curbed.
Extell has been planning a development at the site for more than a year, and the upscale department store Nordstrom was considering opening its first New York City location on the ground floor, as The Real Deal reported. However, further details were unclear.
At 1,550 feet, the project would shatter the record for tallest residential building set by the 1,004-foot tall One57, and also rise significantly higher than the 1,397-foot tower under construction at the former Drake Hotel site at 432 Park Avenue South, as the New York Observer noted.
The DOB permit application reveals that AAI Architects will be on the project. Previous reports have suggested the building is scheduled for completion around 2017 or 2018.
Extell head Gary Barnett had been in negotiations with Nordstrom earlier this year to take to take seven floors — some 285,000 square feet — at the planned mixed-use building. There is no word on whether that deal has changed. [Curbed] and [NYO] —Christopher Cameron
