The $60 million makeover of the Times Square Theater at 217 West 42nd Street into Broadway 4D, a multi-media musical project, will continue for another 16 months at the least, the New York Post reported. “It’s an adagio tempo, but they are progressing,” Cora Cahan, the president of New 42nd Street, the theater’s landlord, told the Post.

Design changes to the space need to be approved by the Historic Preservation Committee before they’re passed on to the city’s Department of Buildings, and a proposal to install a marquee above the sidewalk also requires approval before construction can proceed, the Post said.

As previously reported, a lease was signed last year to bring in the new theater, which will incorporate 3-D film and in-theater effects into live musical performances. The theater was the last 42nd Street theater to get a facelift, an effort that New 42nd Street has spearheaded at eight other venues in the Times Square area.

Cahan told the Post that under the “revised timeline,” construction will kick off in June, with the theater to open one year after. [NYP, 3rd item]Zachary Kussin
