Jessica Tandy’s former Murray Hill brownstone sells after two years

A Murray Hill brownstone once owned by stage and screen actors Hume Corynin and Jessica Tandy has finally found a buyer after two years on the market, The Real Deal has learned.

The historic home at 115 East 35th Street, which is currently owned by contemporary oil painter Patricia Nix, had been listed by four separate brokerages over 23 months before finally going into contract last week. It was most recently listed by Ryan Serhant and Nick Jabbour of Nest Seekers International.

The 4,000-square-foot property sold for over its last asking price of $4 million after a bidding war, sources told The Real Deal. The exact contract price was not immediately available. Serhant and Jabbour declined to comment on the deal.

Nix bought the eight-bedroom home for $950,000 in 1998, public records show, and has since renovated it, adding a solarium and an artist’s studio. Her artwork appears to be scattered throughout the apartment, according to the listing photos. An original drawing by the Italian painter and sculptor Modigliani sits in the living room, and sources speculated that the drawing could be worth more than the house itself.

Nix decided to sell the apartment in 2011, reportedly because she is relocating to Palm Beach. She first listed it for sale with the Corcoran Group in March 2011, asking almost $5 million. It was first relisted by Stribling & Associates in January 2012 and then by Leslie J. Garfield & Co. in July 2012. Both firms lowered the price. Nest Seekers listed the property in December 2012, asking just under $4 million, according to Streeteasy.com.

The home was originally developed by David Stewart in the 1850s for his daughter, famed art collector and philanthropist Isabella Stewart Gardner, according to previous listings. Gardner was the founder of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Former resident Jessica Tandy died in 1994.

The identity of the buyer was not immediately clear.
