Former Boston Red Sox star Kevin Youkilis inked a $12 million, one-year deal last year to fill in as third baseman for injured Yankee Alex Rodriguez for the first half of the Major League Baseball 2013 season. Now, he’s looking to make a less controversial deal.
The Ohio native, whose star turns on the baseball field inspired Sox fans to chant “Yoouuuk!,” is looking to rent a Downtown Manhattan spread for the duration of his contract with the Yankees, The Real Deal has learned. He has enlisted the help of Brown Harris Stevens broker Leslie Mintzer in his search, sources said.
Mintzer, who declined to comment, would not confirm she was working with Youkilis. Youkilis could not be reached.
Sources said the slugger, who is married to Julie Brady, the sister of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, has been checking out rental pads in the $20,000 to $30,000 a month range. Sources said it’s unusual for Yankees to live downtown. Stars such as A-Rod and catcher Jorge Posada have chosen to live on the Upper West Side and Upper East Side to be close to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Perhaps the couple has been taking tips from sister in law Gisele Bundchen, who until recently owned a townhouse in the West Village.
Youkilis may want to check out pads with decent security systems. His Yankee deal has provoked the wrath of some die-hard Sox fans, who have called him a traitor for switching sides. He’d spent nine seasons as part of the Sox.
Rodriguez, who is currently recovering from a January hip surgery, is also said to be looking for a New York City pad. He was reportedly eyeing a $9 million apartment at 111 Central Park North as well as a rental apartment at 15 Central Park West, The Real Deal previously reported.
