Although many brokers and developers see the rapid transformation of the Williamsburg waterfront as a positive, parents who are raising young children in the area may disagree, DNAinfo reported.

Local nannies and stay-at-home moms and dads have discovered that construction noise and debris are hampering peaceful afternoon strolls and interfering with infants’ naps.

“It’s annoying to be outside with a baby, it’s loud and dusty,” said local resident Vanessa Vellucci. “They were power drilling and he’d wake up hearing that dun, dun, dun…the building would almost shake.”

Many of the blocks in the neighborhood, particularly North 4th, North 5th and North 6th Streets, are rampant with construction; as a result, those with young children are avoiding them. However, since the entire Williamsburg waterfront is being rebuilt, the problem is not just limited to one area.

One mother, who asked not to be identified, said that construction is so bad near her condominium on Kent Avenue that she has resorted to taking her baby to a nearby café for naps. Her friend came up with a more extreme solution to the construction problem. “I have a mom friend who is currently trying to move out of her apartment due to construction,” she said.

Meanwhile, at least one resident has resigned herself to living with the situation: “I don’t think there’s anything that can be done,” Jinnie Lieb said. [DNAinfo]Evan Bleier
