Residents of a Brighton Beach luxury condominium are protesting the construction of a 20-foot-tall restroom on Coney Island’s famous boardwalk that they contend will block their ocean views, the New York Times reported.
The bathroom will replace an underground one destroyed last fall by Hurricane Sandy. The new building is scheduled to open by May 24, the beginning of the public beach season.
One resident described the bathroom as a “prison camp toilet.”
Residents of the Oceana complex told the newspaper that the city didn’t tell them about the bathroom until work started last week, which city officials denied. The residents have gone to court twice unsuccessfully to get a temporary restraining order to halt the construction. [NYT] –Hayley Kaplan
