East Village residents are upset about the city’s plan to lease the green space at its Max Meltzer Tower to private developers and have posted flyers at the building to show their displeasure, EV Grieve reported.

A new development at 94 East First Street near First Avenue would go up on the land near the senior citizen complex, EV Grieve said.

The flyers urged residents to speak out against the city’s proposal at a two meetings — one Wednesday and one April 23. There’s also a new Facebook group called Friends of Meltzer.

The 20-story Meltzer Tower has 230 units that house about 246 residents, according to the website of the New York City Housing Authority. The building, completed in 1971, sits on a little more than an acre. [EV Grieve] –Hayley Kaplan
