The East Village may get a new four-story health club and “physical culture center” at an Avenue A building currently home to a Gracefully grocery store, DNAinfo reported.
The proposed health club at the Burger Klein building — located between 2nd and 3rd streets — would include up to 21,000 feet of floor space, according to Department of Building records and the Community Board 3 website seen by DNAinfo. The owner of the building is listed as Charanjit Singh and the architect of the renovations is listed as Mark Carelli, according to the DOB website.
While the $25,000 renovation plan on the DOB website has been listed as disapproved, the owner will seek the support of CB3’s Land Use, Zoning, Public and Private Housing Committee, according to the board’s website.
Singh did not return DNAinfo’s requests for comment, and Carelli declined to comment. The DOB rejected the initial application due to incomplete paperwork, department spokeswoman Gloria Chin told DNAinfo.
The property was built in 1871 and was once the site of a German club house, according to the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. [DNAinfo] —Hiten Samtani
